    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level Starter

    This is a starter for kids who know no Chinese at all. Learners will learn 85 characters and 30 bisyllabic words and will be able to recite 12 simple poems. They will learn to greet, say goodbye, introduce themselves (name, gender and sex) and their family, express numbers and name some objects. They will able to recite 12 poems and grasp the tones and rhythmic patterns of Chinese. They will be able to interact with the teacher and classmates in completing the classroom activities and complete daily homework independently.

    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level 1

    This is a beginner course for kids who have studied the Starter course. Learners will learn 100 new characters and 58 bisyllabic or multi-syllabic words.  They will be able to express gratitude, apologies, personal likes and dislikes. They will also be able to describe actions, spatial locations, colors, and body parts. They will be able to sing or recite 12 simple songs or poems and know the tones and rhythmic patterns of Chinese. They will be able to interact with the teacher and classmates in completing the classroom activities and complete daily homework independently.

    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level 2

    This is a beginner course for learners aged 7-9 from a non-Chinese background (Grades 2-3) who knows some Chinese. Learners will learn 110 characters and 75 bisyllabic words and be able to retell the content of the 12 texts studied.  They will be able to express time and personal abilities,and describe means of transportation, distances, speeds, health conditions and comparisons.  They will be able to read the 12 texts with fluency and use the target words and sentence patterns in writing. They will be able to do the read-alouds with their parents. They will be able to interact with the teacher and classmates in completing the classroom activities and complete daily homework independently.

    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level 3

    This is an intermediate course for non-Chinese background learners aged 8-10 (Grades 3-4) who have some knowledge of Chinese. By studying 12 texts,learners will learn 110 characters and 70 bisyllabic words.  They will be able to retell the content of the 12 texts studied. They will be able to express sequences and describe sports, daily activities, actions and spatial locations. They will also be able to make telephone calls and express cause-effect relations. They will be able to read the 12 texts with fluency and use the target words and sentence patterns in writing. They will be able to do the read-alouds with their parents. They will be able to interact with the teacher and classmates in completing the classroom activities and complete daily homework independently

    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level 4

    ﹒This intermediate level course is suitable for learners aged 9-11 in the fourth or fifth grade who have mastered a minimum of 500 characters.
    ﹒Upon completion, learners will be able to grasp 115 new characters and 90 new bi-syllabic and multi-syllabic words and be able to reproduce the 12 texts studied in their own words. 
    ﹒Learners will be able to introduce themselves and others; and talk about topics such as health, sports, personal habits, and eating. 
    ﹒Learners will command the pinyin system, have satisfactory Chinese keyboard skills, and be able to recite simple poems with good pronunciation and appropriate intonation. 
    ﹒Learners will learn to interact with peers and teachers in completing classroom activities and independently complete daily homework. 

    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level 5

    ﹒This intermediate level course is suitable for learners aged 10-12 in the fifth or sixth grade who are from a Chinese cultural background and have a fairly good command of basic Chinese.
    ﹒Upon completion, learners will be able to grasp 115 new characters and 100 new bi-syllabic and multi-syllabic words and be able to reproduce the 12 texts studied in their own words. 
    ﹒Learners will be able to describe a variety of personal appearances, personalities, feelings, and personal relationships. In addition, they will be able to raise and answer questions concerning people, things, and shopping. 
    ﹒Learners will have satisfactory knowledge of Chinese holidays, festivals and customs, and they will be aware of the similarities and dissimilarities between Chinese and Western cultures. 
    ﹒Learners will learn to interact with peers and teachers in completing classroom activities and independently complete daily homework. 

     

    Young Chinese-Developing Speaking Skills, Level 6

    This intermediate level course is suitable for sixth or seventh graders who have completed Book 6 and whose Chinese level meets the requirements of YCT4 or HSK3.

    YCT :

    stands for Youth Chinese Test. The new YCT test was launched by Hanban in an effort to encourage foreign young students to learn Chinese and improve their Chinese language proficiency. As part of this effort, since 2004 Hanban has organized experts from different disciplines such as Chinese language teaching, linguistics, psychology and educational measurement to work on the program, conducting surveys in order to understand the latest trends in overseas Chinese language teaching and learning.

    HSK:

    stands for Chinese Proficiency Test. HSK is an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency,assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives. HSK consists of six levels, namely HSK (level I), HSK (level II), HSK (level III), HSK (level IV), HSK (level V), and HSK (level VI).
